Laying the foundation for a Circular Economy

The average person in the UAE consumes 94 kg of plastic per year. A significant portion of this plastic is used only once and disposed in our lands and seas where it takes up to hundreds of years to degrade. 

To limit the damage caused by existing plastic waste and help create a more sustainable circular economy in the UAE, we worked with partners to convene a plastics packaging recovery committee and implement a plastic circular economy proof of concept in Abu Dhabi. We also participate in the UAE Circular Economy Council to steer the successful foundation of a circular economy in the UAE. 

In line with the UAE’s policy on single-use plastic, our Rethink Plastic campaign helps retail businesses reduce their plastic usage across their operations and alter consumer behaviours. By charging an incremental fee per plastic bag, our retail partners have successfully encouraged customers to switch to reusable alternatives.
